I don’t understand how you would find the x or y intercept from an equation. How do I do it?

So in problem 3.4 there is that whole page about understanding linear equations and I’m trying to read this and all I am thinking is 6488329`1973654356. The numbers mean nothing to me. I like don’t get the...Umm what’s the word?? Significance? Yeah I guess significance is a good word. I don’t get the significance of all these numbers.
Like….
When they say
Y=5+0.5x or y=mx+b
What does that mean????

You can find it in the equation by add-ons or starting at zero. The add-ons are where the y intercept is. Zero is the y and x intercept. You can not intercept the x on an equation.

I know how to use the equation to find the y intercept, but not the x intercept. If there is a number added onto the end of an equation, such as s=3x6+20, then the y intercept would be 20 because instead of starting at 0, you start with 20 right away, so that would be the y intercept.
This is not that hard. if there is an add-on this is the y-intercept and if it does not have an add-on it is both the y-intercept and the x-intercept, (thatis zero) unless the graph is gradualy going down will the x-intercept be anything but zero. SS-Ek (congradulations in the use of that word Hr)

In the book Moving Strait Ahead I didn’t quite understand everything on 3.4. I do understand the equation part but I don’t get the part about “linear”. Also I don’t understand #4 in 3.4. It asks you to tell them what the coefficient of x is in an equation… blah blah blah I’m just not processing it through my head. Everything else I understand. sm

Then the last problem I’ve had is finding average rates in hard equations like in ACES 1a in investigation 2 were it talked about bicycle speeds and rates.

Okay so we use the ratio to see if climbing the stairs for a person would be easy.
Like say we were trying to build stairs.
When the “carpenters” were finding the guide lines for the ratios I think they took averages for strides that people had and did their smallest and largest stride. So when they were building the stairs they would chooses one in between there so either way it would never be too hard for someone to climb the stairs. I think this may be an answer. But I may have it wrong myself. He he. Okay then

You can find the x and y intercept by using the equation to make a graph and just seeing where the line crosses the x and y axis.

In the table the x is 30 so in the equation you put in 30 like this 100-3*30=2*30-50. Does it make sence now if not off with yee head HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

to find the y intercept you find the addon such as if it was 5 the y intercept would be 5 if there is no addon the y intercept is zero
I understand how to most of the things on 3.4 but I really don't understand fully to find the y-intercepts!!!

Its quite simple if you think about it. Make the x in the table thirty so your equation will come out with thirty so vthen it'll probably look like this.
3x30=2x30-50.
